MOHELA's Contributions to Missouri Communities

As a quasi-governmental entity based in St. Louis, MOHELA is a strong contributor to its state – as a vital economic engine and as a community partner for Missourians. MOHELA is a mission-driven organization with a commitment to making higher education accessible for Missouri's students.

Who is MOHELA?

With over 40 years of experience, MOHELA has a track record of providing exceptional customer service to the eight million borrowers it assists with the management of their student loans.

MOHELA plays an essential role in the federal student loan ecosystem, providing support and assistance for around eight million federal borrowers on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA).

MOHELA's Contributions to Missouri

MOHELA is a strong economic contributor to the state of Missouri – providing employment for 540 Missourians. As MOHELA has expanded its work to support and assist more students and families, the organization has grown and now employs nearly 1,300 employees across 27 states.

Because of the organization's care for its employees and contributions to its state and nation, MOHELA has been ranked a Top Workplace by the St. Louis Post Dispatch and USA Today. MOHELA is frequently named a top servicer in FSA quarterly surveys due to their commitment to providing high-quality customer service to their borrowers.

MOHELA Gives Back

A mission-driven organization with a commitment to making education accessible for Missouri students, MOHELA gives back to the student community through its Foundation: The Missouri Scholarship & Loan Foundation.

MOHELA's Foundation provides grants, scholarships, and zero-interest loans to support local students, families, local institutions, high schools, and nonprofit organizations in Missouri.

Over the last five years (2018-2023), the Foundation has:

  • Assisted more than 8,500 Missouri students

  • Distributed $17.5 million in scholarships and grants

  • Provided $24.2 million in interest-free loans for Missouri students


MOHELA also contributed more than $6 million toward Missouri programs in 2023 alone to further support student scholarships and grants, including Access Missouri, Missouri's A+ Program and Bright Flight.

The Foundation also helps educate high school students and families in Missouri to better understand the FAFSA process. In the 2023 academic year, MOHELA educated over 500 local high school counselors to help better inform students and families of how to navigate the college financial aid application process.
